Mapping, assessment, management of transboundary water resources in the IGAD sub-region

January 2007 -The Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) received a €1.8 million grant to implement and operate an Integrated Transboundary Water Resources Management process. The project aims at enhancing regional cooperation and water resource governance capacities to address water related development problems at national and sub-regional level. It will also contribute to build regional capacity to provide hydrological data and information services and establish mechanisms of cooperation among the IGAD member countries for water resources management.

Inventory of rural water supply and sanitation infrastructures

December 2006 -The Government of Cameroon received a €470,000 grant to prepare an inventory of rural water supply and sanitation facilities and water resources in the country to support the development of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) program for Cameroon up to the year 2015. With that the Government will have better knowledge of the existing infrastructure and water resources of the country to support the development of the rural water and sanitation sector.

Development of the African Network Of Basin Organisations (ANBO)

December 2006 -The African Network of Basin Organisations (ANBO) received a €439,000 grant to consolidate and build its institutional capacity and operations, strengthen its interaction with other river basin organisations, with a view to increasing the number of basin members, creating new basin organisations and building the capacities of the existing ones. The project also seeks to help ANBO develop lasting relations with AMCOW, external support agencies, and other partners.

Piloting rainwater harvesting techniques in Bugesera

December 2006 -The Government of Rwanda received a € 450,000 grant to support a project intended to introduce rainwater harvesting techniques for agriculture and livestock use, as well as to supply drinking water for human consumption in rural districts of Rwanda. This pilot scheme will also make it possible to popularize and scale up the techniques for rainwater harvesting throughout areas in the country which frequently suffer from the effects of drought.

Development of an integrated water resources management (IWRM) plan for Namibia

December 2006 -The Government of Namibia received a €498,000 grant to support the formulation of the national IWRM plan for the sustainable management of water resources. The project aims at enabling Namibia to achieve the sustainable management of water resource for the purpose of economic development, improved social well-being and protection of the environment.

Preparation of the national rural water supply and sanitation programme

December 2006 - The Government of Mozambique received a €486,000 grant for a project aimed at delivering a study that reviews the current implementation of rural water supply and sanitation services and recommends improvements through a comprehensive program to meet national and MDG targets. The study will prepare a national RWSS program for immediate implementation throughout the country. The study will also contribute towards the institutional strengthening and capacity building efforts to ensure sustainable development of the water supply and sanitation sector.

Water supply and sanitation services for the urban poor in Kagugube Parish - Kampala

December 2006 - The Uganda’s National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) received a €800,000 grant to undertake an integrated project of water and sanitation services to the mainly low-income community of Kagugube Parish, Kampala. The project is to contribute to poverty reduction and improve health outcomes. It also seeks to capture and shard lessons learned in the delivery of services to the urban poor, a major concern in Africa’s ever increasing slums created by rapid urbanisation.

Kisumu district primary schools water and sanitation

December 2006 - HORIZON 3000, a regional NGO based in Uganda, received a € 230,000 grant to provide water, sanitation and hygiene in six schools in Kisumu by constructing innovative rainwater harvesting and ecological sanitation facilities, and teaching children about proper water use, hygiene and sanitation practices. The project is a pilot with main focus is to change hygiene behaviours and demonstrate the value of rainwater harvesting for possible replication in Kenya and regionally.
