Background: The City of Windhoek (CoW) is faced with steady demographie growth, and growing informai settlements. The Municipality, which encompasses 326,000 inhabitants, is located in a semi­ arid area  with annual  rainfall averaging  370mm only and scarce surface  water and  groundwater resources. Windhoek's main water resource is transferred over several hundreds of kilometres from the Northern part of Namibia. Climate change is anticipated to result in higher temperatures, increased evaporation, and rainfall intensity across Namibia.

Background: In 2012 Sierra Leone experienced a rather severe outbreak of cholera, affecting over 5,000 people with 63 deaths in the Western Area from January to August 2012. The outbreak brought into sharp focus the magnitude of the task at hand of making safe clean water accessible to the people.

December 2006 - The Government of Senegal received a €935,000 grant to support the preparation of a Master Plan for the improvement of sanitation services in different districts of Zinguichor, solve the environmental issues generated by wastewater management, eradicate the impacts of severe floods created by anarchic rains, and advocate in favor of new technologies for water supply and sanitation.

December 2013 - Ghana Water LC received a €2.1 million grant to undertake feasibility studies of a public-private partnership for a water transfer project from the Volta in Ghana to Lome in Togo. The study includes an assessment of the environmental and social impact of the project and other technical assessments. The project is expected to provide water to 4 million people.

The rationale for this project is the need to dramatically improve the usability of existing school sanitation facilities through franchised operation and maintenance services and safe handling of faecal sludge for non-sewered urban and peri-urban areas of East London District. This is aimed to facilitate better learning and improve environmental sanitation.

October 2014- the Hadejia-Jama'are-Komadugu-Yobe Basin Trust Fund  has received a €2 million grant to prepare a strategic action plan to develop water resources in the Komadugu-Yobe basin in Northern Nigeria. The plan will address fundamental water resources management issues that are preventing increasing water needs in the region from being met. Over 15 million people depend on the basin and stand to benefit from this project, particularly farmers, pastoralists and fishermen.

January 2014 – The Athi Water Services Board of Nairobi,Kenya, received a €2.9 million grant to introduce sanitation services in Mukuru and other informal settlements through social business ventures. The project will improve livelihoods of the urban poor by providing affordable sanitation services and jobs. The scheme will promote mainly female entrepreneurs to embark on branded toilet provision ventures as well as provide business training. 

Background: Malawi is one of the countries with the highest urbanisation rates. With a population of about 662,000 (2008), the city of Blantyre is the largest in Malawi. Between 1998 and 2008 the city experienced a population increase of about 32%1. The continued influx of people combined with decades of inadequate urban planning, has led to rapid spread of informal settlements with deplorable living conditions. The major problems include overcrowding, inadequate housing and lack of basic services, in particular water supply and sanitation.

Background: The rationale for the project is the need to increase access to safe, sustainable and inclusive sanitation and hygiene, with improved management of faecal sludge for people living in deprived urban communities in Uganda. The project forms as integral part of Government efforts to improve access to sustainable sanitation in line with the National Development Plan (NDP II) and Implementation Strategy (2017-2020).
