African Water Facility has approved a grant of €1.3 million for the transaction advisory services required for the development of wastewater treatment and waste to energy plants in Otjiwarongo, Namibia.
The wastewater treatment and waste to energy project seeks to improve solid waste management in the municipality and contribute to Namibia government’s effort to improve access to sustainable water and sanitation management, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – ‘ensure access to water and sanitation for all’ – in its urban areas by 2030.
The transaction advisory services will result in the development of a new water reclamation plant (tertiary treatment plant with a capacity of 10,000m3/day), to treat water from an upgraded secondary wastewater treatment plant. It will also lead to the preparation of an investment blueprint which will support resource mobilization for future sector investments in Namibia and Regional Member Countries in Africa.
Urban poor who constitute about 40% of the entire urban population in Otjiwarongo, will benefit from provision of improved water supply and sanitation services including solid waste management and a better living environment. 45,000 direct beneficiaries including businesses within Otjiwarongo and surrounding areas will benefit from improved access to safe water.
The project is informed by the 2016 Otjiwarongo Sewer Master Plan and the National Solid Waste Management Strategy (2018 – 2023). It aligns the African Water Facility’s 2017 – 2025 strategy and contributes to the Facility’s investment promotion.
